Misleading Battery Life Claims
One of the drawbacks of the DJI Avata 2 lies in its battery life. Despite DJIs claim of a flight time of, up to 23 minutes real world usage often falls short of this mark. Extended or intense flights tend to decrease battery life. For instance during flying sessions I have only managed to stay airborne for eight to twelve minutes at. Under relaxed flying conditions the battery rarely lasts beyond sixteen minutes. This limitation could prove challenging when planning filming sessions or multiple consecutive flights.
The limitation, in range set at a 500 meters poses a challenge particularly for those interested in long distance or mountain surfing flights. The Avata 2 faces issues with its range due to battery constraints despite the O4 transmission technology claiming up to 13 kilometers of reach. This limitation hinders the drone from realizing its capabilities.
Wind Sensitivity and Stability
Wind sensitivity is a concern for the DJI Avata 2 as mild wind conditions can greatly affect stability and increase power consumption during flights. I’ve observed this firsthand noting that the drones performance suffers in fluctuating weather conditions and becomes less reliable for photography on days.
Setup Complexity and Compatibility Issues
Setting up the DJI Avata 2 is more time consuming than drones I’ve tested, with preparations for the radio, goggles and other components extending beyond what one might anticipate for swift take off. Moreover compatibility issues arise with accessories as the latest goggles are not compatible, with O3 air units or earlier DJI Avata models. This can lead to increased costs as users may need to invest in equipment.
Learning Curve for FPV Flying
Learning FPV flying with the Avata 2 can be quite challenging, for beginners. It requires practice to maintain proficiency, which might be tricky for users. If you don’t fly regularly your skills may. Your flight performance and video quality could suffer. Moreover flying FPV with the Avata 2 is both physically and emotionally taxing, leading to fatigue during sessions.
Controller and Software Challenges
The controller and software of the Avata 2 pose some challenges particularly when it comes to activating features like return to home. The controllers operation is not as intuitive as one would expect and intermittent software glitches can affect user experience and flight stability. There have been instances of erratic drone behavior during maneuvers or sudden changes in direction due to these software issues that may require future updates.
Limitations in Versatility
The DJI Avata 2s focus on FPV style shots may limit its suitability for all purposes. Unlike drones known for producing smooth cinematic videos the Avata 2 lacks the same level of versatility and adaptability, in various filming scenarios.
The Avata 2 is designed for range, cine style flying with its size and prop protectors making it less ideal, for long range flights or mountain surfing. Quality concerns arise regarding its performance in rough conditions despite its durability. Flying near water or in environments poses risks due to damage from water infiltration even though it initially performs well. Users should be cautious.
Motion Controller and Geo-Fencing Issues
The motion controller, while innovative may present challenges for movements and transitioning between manual modes during flights impacting overall control and precision. This limitation becomes more apparent when attempting flight maneuvers.
Another issue with the Avata 2 is geo fencing, intended as a safety feature. Capable of restricting drone flights in areas. Geo fencing can be frustrating when it prevents flying in permitted zones in locations, with poor phone connectivity required to unlock restricted areas.
Alerts and Internal Storage Limitations
Alerts may pop up during flights discussing battery signals and potential loss of RC connection even if the drone still holds an amount of battery life. This situation can dampen the flying experience. Be quite puzzling.
The 46 GB internal storage may not suffice for individuals who tend to forget their memory cards or those seeking space, for extended sessions. Insufficient internal storage could pose restrictions, especially when additional room is needed for high quality video content.
Noise Levels and Pass-Through Mode
Although quieter than its predecessor the DJI Avata 2 remains audible which could present challenges during flights or in environments where noise levels are a concern.
While the pass through mode is beneficial it may not be ideal for users desiring a view of their surroundings due, to its limited field of vision. Users might find themselves frequently lifting their goggles to survey their surroundings while flying which could prove inconvenient.
Control Sensitivity and Real View Camera Focus
The sensitivity and precise movements required when using the motion controller can make maneuvering in confined spaces tricky. The drones control sensitivity might feel a bit too touchy for some users causing turns, in modes. Users will need to adjust to this and get accustomed to it.
Regarding the real view cameras length some users find the limited focus of the goggles less useful. Many prefer removing the goggles to get a view of their surroundings than relying solely on the camera during flights, which can be inconvenient.
Pre-Programmed Flips and Tricks
One drawback is that the pre programmed flips and tricks on the motion controller cannot be customized, restricting users to moves each time. This limitation may lead to a decrease in excitement over time as users are unable to create their maneuvers.
Filming Capabilities and Safety Concerns
For individuals needing filming capabilities the Avata 2 proves practical. To capture content at the top and bottom users must shoot in a 4×3 aspect ratio, which may not suit all filming needs.
Although simple to operate and suitable for beginners flying the Avata 2 with ease may also increase the likelihood of crashes or accidents due, to its controls raising safety concerns. This issue can worsen due, to the drones sensitivity in control and the lack of customization options for programmed movements.
Stabilizing After Filming
While the Avata 2 provides stabilization some users may not find it top notch. To enhance stabilization users might opt for processing methods despite the extra effort and time involved. Using processing stabilization tools like Gyroflow is often necessary for complex flights or achieving a cinematic look.
Mental and Physical Fatigue
Flying FPV with the Avata 2 is mentally and physically demanding compared to drones. Extended flights could lead to exhaustion for users unfamiliar with it making FPV flying challenging for some individuals.
Closing Thoughts
Even though the DJI Avata 2 offers advantages these drawbacks highlight considerations for buyers. Evaluating these downsides alongside the drones features is crucial, in determining if it aligns with your needs and flying preferences.
However, if after reading all these cons, you still want to buy the product, congratulations! You’re making a well-informed decision, and you won’t regret your purchase.
